according to the map of world war ii in europe, where were the allied forces able to advance in 1942?

In 1942, the Allied advance in Europe shown on typical World War II maps is mainly on the Eastern Front , where the Soviet (Red) Army began pushing the Germans back around Stalingrad and in parts of southern Russia.

More specifically, according to commonly used 1939–1942 or 1942–1945 European theater maps, you would see Allied advances:

  • In the Soviet Union, especially in the region around Stalingrad on the Volga River, where Soviet forces halted and then began to reverse the German advance by late 1942.
  • Along sections of the Eastern Front in eastern and southern Europe, as German offensive momentum stalled and the front line stopped moving eastward and began to shift westward in places.

In Western Europe (France, the Low Countries, etc.), those maps usually show little or no Allied ground advance yet in 1942; the major Allied landings in France do not appear until 1944.
