how big are turkeys
Adult turkeys are fairly large birds: wild males are usually about 3.5–4 feet (1.0–1.2 m) tall and 39–49 inches long, while females are closer to 3 feet and 30–37 inches long. In terms of weight, wild males (toms) are commonly 11–24 pounds (about 5–11 kg) and females (hens) about 5–12 pounds (2.5–5.5 kg), though exceptionally big males can reach the mid‑30‑pound range. Domesticated meat turkeys raised for food can be even heavier, with farmed toms often grown to around 40 pounds live weight and hens around the high‑teens, which is why supermarket birds in the 16–24 pound range are typically males.
