how big is a double bed compared to a queen

A standard queen bed is noticeably bigger than a standard double (also called full), mainly in width.

Quick size comparison

In North America (and many online guides today):

  • Double / Full bed : about 54 inches wide by 75 inches long (137 cm × 190 cm).
  • Queen bed : about 60 inches wide by 80 inches long (152 cm × 203 cm).

So, compared to a double, a queen is roughly:

  • 6 inches (15 cm) wider.
  • 5 inches (13 cm) longer.
  • Around 18–20% more surface area (about 4,050 sq in for double vs 4,800 sq in for queen).

How this feels in real life

  • For one person: a double is usually fine, but a queen feels more spacious , especially if you move around a lot.
  • For two people: a double can feel tight; each person gets about the width of a cot, while a queen gives each sleeper a bit more shoulder room.
  • For room size: if your room can comfortably fit a double, a queen usually fits too, but you’ll have slightly less floor space around the bed.

Regional note

In the UK and some other regions, a “double” is usually around 135 × 190 cm and a “king” (not “queen”) is 150 × 200 cm, which is very close to a North American queen. So if you’re reading UK forums, “double vs king” is roughly the same comparison as “double vs queen” in North America.
