how change a gullet in sydhill stock swing fender

To change the gullet in a Syd Hill stock swinging fender saddle, remove the front screws, peel back the panels, open the Velcro flap, swap the gullet plate, then reassemble everything and double-check the fit. Syd Hill’s own instructions describe that process, and they note that their stock and stock fender saddles use interchangeable steel gullet plates.

Steps

  1. Put the saddle on a secure, stable surface.
  1. Locate and undo the two front screws on the underside/front area of the saddle.
  1. Gently peel back the panels to expose the Velcro flap.
  1. Open the Velcro flap to reach the gullet plate housing.
  1. Remove the two screws holding the gullet plate in place.
  1. Lift out the existing gullet plate and insert the new one of the correct size.
  1. Refit and tighten the gullet plate screws, but do not over-tighten.
  1. Close the Velcro flap, fold the panels back, and replace the front screws.
  1. Check that everything is secure before riding.

Useful notes

  • Syd Hill says the stock fender and swinging fender models are among the adjustable styles in their range.
  • Their gullet plates are colour- and size-coded, which helps match the plate to the horse.
  • If the saddle still does not sit right after changing the plate, the next step is usually a proper saddle fit check.

Safety point

Work slowly and use the correct screwdriver so you do not strip the screws or force the plate. If anything feels stuck or misaligned, stop and have a saddler inspect it rather than forcing the parts.

Quick version

Undo front screws, peel back panels, open Velcro, remove old plate, insert new plate, refit screws, close everything, and test the saddle fit.
