how come my 7 mos old is orange color

An orange tint in a 7-month-old is often from carotenemia after eating a lot of orange/yellow foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, or pumpkin, and it’s usually harmless. But if the baby’s eyes are yellow , the color is spreading beyond the skin, or the baby seems unwell, jaundice or another medical issue needs prompt medical attention.

Most likely reasons

  • Carotenemia: Too much beta-carotene from foods can make a baby’s skin look orange or yellow-orange, especially on the palms, soles, and face.
  • Jaundice: This is yellowing from bilirubin buildup and is more concerning if the whites of the eyes are yellow too.
  • Less common causes: Liver problems, blood breakdown issues, infection, or other medical conditions can also cause yellowing.

What to check right now

  • Look at the whites of the eyes in natural light.
  • Think about whether your baby has been eating lots of orange vegetables or foods lately.
  • Watch for symptoms like poor feeding, sleepiness, vomiting, fever, pale stools, dark urine, or belly swelling.

When to call the doctor

Call your pediatrician today if:

  • The eyes look yellow.
  • The orange color is new or getting worse.
  • Your baby has any illness symptoms.
  • You are unsure whether it’s food-related or jaundice.

Quick note

If you want, I can help you figure out whether it sounds more like food- related carotenemia or possible jaundice based on what your baby has been eating and whether the eyes look yellow.
