How many germans have AC in there homes

Around 6% of homes in Germany have air conditioning, according to a 2026 DW report citing that figure for Germany. A 2023 survey also found that about one in eight German households already used AC, which suggests the share has been rising depending on how the question is measured.

Quick context

Germany has historically had much lower AC adoption than countries like the US because many buildings were designed to retain heat in colder months, not to handle hot summers well. Recent heat waves are changing that, and demand for cooling equipment has been growing fast.

Why the numbers differ

The gap between 6% and 12.5% comes from different sources and different wording in surveys. One source refers broadly to homes with AC, while the survey result reflects respondents saying they already use an air- conditioning unit.

Simple answer

If you want the shortest answer: roughly 1 in 16 German homes, and possibly closer to 1 in 8 in some surveys, have AC.

Germany still has relatively low AC coverage, but it is increasing as summers get hotter.
