how many innings are in baseball

A standard professional baseball game has nine innings.

Quick Scoop

In Major League Baseball and most professional and college leagues, a regulation game is nine innings long, with each inning split into a top and bottom half where each team takes a turn batting. If the score is tied after nine innings, the game goes into extra innings and continues one inning at a time until one team leads at the end of a full inning.

At other levels, the number of innings can be different: for example, many high school games are seven innings, and some youth leagues play six or fewer, often with “mercy rules” that can end a game early if the score margin is very large. So if the question is simply “how many innings are in baseball,” the usual answer people mean is nine innings for a full, regulation game.
