how many substitutes are allowed in world cup

Each team is allowed five substitutes in a World Cup match, with substitutions generally limited to three stoppages during regular time. In knockout games, teams also get one extra substitution in extra time.

How it works

  • Regular time: 5 substitutions per team.
  • Substitution windows: usually 3 chances to stop play and make those changes, not counting halftime.
  • Extra time: if a knockout match goes to extra time, teams may get one additional substitution.

Simple example

A team could make 2 subs at halftime, 2 later in the second half, and 1 more in extra time if the match reaches that stage.

Quick note

Some reports also mention special cases like concussion substitutions, which can add another change under FIFA rules.
