how much gas will my trip cost
I can estimate that, but I need three details first: trip distance, your vehicle’s fuel economy, and the gas price you want to use. The standard formula is fuel cost = distance ÷ MPG × gas price, and online trip calculators use that same approach to estimate road-trip fuel expense.
What I need
- Distance of the trip, in miles or kilometers.
- Your car’s MPG, or L/100 km if you use metric.
- Gas price per gallon or per liter.
Example
If a trip is 300 miles, your car gets 30 MPG, and gas is $3.80 per gallon, the trip uses 10 gallons and costs about $38.00. AAA’s posted national average gas price was $3.8040 as of 7/5/26, which can work as a current reference point if you want a rough estimate.
