how often do you take advil

For most healthy adults using over‑the‑counter Advil (ibuprofen), the usual pattern is:

  • 200–400 mg (1–2 standard OTC tablets) every 4–6 hours only as needed for pain or fever, not on a fixed schedule.
  • Do not exceed 1,200 mg in 24 hours (that is 6 regular 200 mg tablets) unless a clinician has specifically told you otherwise.
  • Do not self‑treat with ibuprofen for more than about 10 days for pain or 3 days for fever without checking with a healthcare professional.

In prescription settings (for things like arthritis), doctors may use higher total daily doses (up to 3,200 mg per day, split into 3–4 doses), but this is only under medical supervision because higher and/or long‑term dosing raises the risk of stomach bleeding, kidney problems, and cardiovascular issues.

If you find yourself needing Advil:

  • Every day for more than a few days , or
  • At or near the maximum daily dose,

it is important to talk with a doctor to look for the underlying cause of pain and to check whether ibuprofen is still safe for you, especially if you have kidney disease, heart disease, stomach ulcers, are over 60, or take blood thinners, aspirin, or other NSAIDs.
