how often is afcon played
AFCON has historically been played every two years, but from 2028 it will switch to being played every four years.
Current and future cycle
- Since 1968, the Africa Cup of Nations has been held on a biennial (every two years) basis, with a brief adjustment around 2012–2013 to realign the calendar.
- CAF has now decided that, after the 2025 and 2027 tournaments, AFCON will move to a quadrennial (every four years) cycle starting with an edition in 2028, followed by 2032, 2036, and so on.
Key dates to know
- Upcoming editions remain in the old pattern: Morocco 2025 and the 2027 tournament in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are still on the two-year cycle.
- The 2028 AFCON acts as the “bridge” into the new cycle, with the next one planned for 2032, aligning AFCON more closely with tournaments like the UEFA European Championship.
