how soon can you mow new sod

You can usually mow new sod about 10 to 21 days after installation, but the better rule is to mow only once it has started rooting and the lawn actually needs a trim.

When to start

A good first mow is often around 1 to 3 weeks after laying sod, with many guides landing on 14 to 21 days. Some sod may be ready a little sooner in ideal conditions, while stressed or slow-rooting sod may need longer.

Check before mowing

Use a light tug test: if the sod resists lifting and feels anchored, it is closer to ready. If it pulls up easily, wait a few more days and keep watering carefully.

First-mow tips

  • Use a walk-behind mower instead of a riding mower to avoid damaging the fresh sod.
  • Mow high the first time, and do not remove more than one-third of the blade height.
  • Make sure the blades are sharp for a clean cut.

Simple rule of thumb

If the sod is rooted, dry enough to mow, and has grown tall enough to need cutting, it is ready. If conditions have been hot, dry, or stressful, waiting closer to 3 to 4 weeks can be safer.
