How to accept or decline the call in Apple airpods

To accept a call with AirPods, press the stem once on either AirPod. To decline a call, use a double-press on compatible models, or head gestures on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 if that feature is enabled.

Quick Scoop

Here’s the practical version:

  • Answer a call: Press the stem once on either AirPod.
  • End a call: Double-press the stem on either AirPod.
  • Decline a call: On supported models, shake your head side to side; otherwise, double-press the stem to send it to voicemail.
  • Supported head gestures: AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 can use nodding to answer and shaking to decline, if the feature is turned on.

Model differences

Apple’s current guidance separates newer models from older ones. AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 support head gestures for call control, while older models rely on stem presses or double-taps depending on generation.

Turn it on

If head gestures are not working, make sure your AirPods are connected to your iPhone and that Announce Calls/head gestures are enabled in settings. Apple says voice-based call handling and head gestures depend on the supported model and the right settings being active.

Bottom line

For most users, the simplest rule is: one press to answer, double-press to decline or end, and head shake on newer AirPods.
