how to create group chat on iphone

To create a group chat on iPhone, open the Messages app, tap the new message button, add multiple people in the To: field, then type and send your first message to start the group. Apple’s Messages support also notes you can later tap the group icon at the top of the conversation to manage the group.

Quick steps

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap the compose/new message button.
  3. Enter the names, phone numbers, or Apple Account info of the people you want to add.
  4. Type a message.
  5. Tap Send to create the group.

Useful details

  • If everyone is using iPhone with iMessage enabled, the group will usually support extra features like naming the chat and changing the group photo.
  • If the group includes non-Apple users, it may fall back to SMS/MMS with fewer features.
  • Some carriers may require group messaging to be enabled in Settings > Messages.

After it’s created

You can open the group thread and tap the group icon at the top to rename it or adjust group settings, depending on whether the chat is an iMessage group.

Minimal version

Open Messages, start a new message, add more than one person, and send the first text. That creates the group chat.
