how to crop a screenshot

You can crop a screenshot in just a few taps or clicks on almost any device. The exact steps depend on whether you’re on Windows, Mac, iPhone, or Android.

Quick Scoop

Cropping a screenshot basically means cutting away the parts you don’t need so only the important area remains. It’s built into most modern systems, so you usually don’t need extra apps.

On Windows (Snipping Tool & Print Screen)

  • Press Windows + Shift + S to open the built‑in snipping overlay.
  • Choose a snip type (usually Rectangular), then click and drag over the area you want to keep; that’s already a “cropped” capture.
  • The image is copied to your clipboard; click the notification to open it, then click the crop icon if you want to refine the crop and save it.

If you used the standard Print Screen:

  • Press Print Screen to capture the whole screen.
  • Open an editor like Paint, press Ctrl + V to paste, drag to select the part you want, then click Crop and save.

On Mac (Built‑in Shortcuts)

  • Press Shift + Command + 4.
  • Your cursor becomes a crosshair; click and drag over the area you want.
  • Release to capture only that area, which gives you a pre‑cropped screenshot saved to your desktop by default.

To crop an existing screenshot:

  • Open it in Preview , click the selection tool, drag over the area, then choose Tools → Crop and save.

On iPhone (iOS)

To crop right after taking a screenshot:

  • Take a screenshot (usually Side button + Volume Up).
  • Tap the small preview that appears in the corner.
  • Drag the borders inwards until only what you want remains, then tap Done → Save.

To crop later:

  • Open Photos , select the screenshot, tap Edit.
  • Tap the crop icon, adjust the frame, then tap Done to save the cropped version.

On Android (general idea)

  • Take a screenshot (often Power + Volume Down together).
  • Tap the floating screenshot preview; most phones show an Edit or pencil icon.
  • Tap Crop , drag the corners to frame the part you want, then save.

If the preview disappears:

  • Open the screenshot in your Photos/Gallery app.
  • Tap Edit , choose Crop , adjust, then save.

Using Online/Image Editors

If your device tools feel limited, you can:

  • Upload the screenshot to an online image cropper or open it in any image editor.
  • Use the crop tool to drag a box around the content you want, then save or export the image.

TL;DR: Take the screenshot, open it in an editor, use the crop tool to drag around the important part, then save—on most devices you can even crop at the moment you capture so you only save what you actually need.
