How to install fonts
Installing fonts is usually quick: download
the font file, unzip it if needed, then open the font and choose
Install. On Windows, you can also drag the file into the
Fonts area in Settings or into C:\Windows\Fonts; on Mac, you use
Font Book or double-click the file and install it there.
Windows
- Download the font file, usually in
.zip,.ttf, or.otfformat. - If it is zipped, extract it first.
- Double-click the font file to open the preview.
- Select Install, or right-click the file and choose Install.
- Alternatively, go to Settings > Personalization > Fonts and drag the file in.
Mac
- Download the font file.
- Double-click the file, or open it in Font Book.
- Click Install Font.
- After installation, the font should appear in apps that support fonts.
Helpful tips
- Fonts from trusted sources are safest to install.
- If the font does not appear right away, restart the app you want to use.
- Some downloaded fonts are for web use only and are not meant to be installed as desktop fonts.
Quick note
Microsoft’s guidance says Windows users can install
fonts by downloading the file, unzipping it if needed, then right-clicking and
choosing Install, or by dragging it into the Fonts folder in Settings or
C:\Windows\Fonts. Apple’s guidance says Mac users can install
fonts through Font Book or by double-clicking the font file and confirming
installation.
TL;DR: download the font, unzip if needed, then install it by double-clicking or dragging it into your system’s Fonts manager.
