how to save the owlbear cub

To save the owlbear cub in Baldur’s Gate 3 and get it to your camp, you need to do a specific sequence of steps in the nest, the goblin camp, and then at your own camp.

Step 1 – In the Owlbear Nest

  1. Go to the Owlbear Nest in the forest in Act 1 (the cave with the mother and cub).
  2. When you meet the mother owlbear:
    • Do not kill the cub.
    • Either pass the dialogue checks (Animal Handling, Survival, Performance, Speak with Animals, etc.) and back away, or kill the mother while never targeting the cub.
  3. After the encounter, leave the cave with the cub still alive and don’t attack it.

The key flag is: you must have interacted with the mother/cub, then left the cave while the cub survives.

Step 2 – Wait for the Goblins to Take the Cub

  1. After your first encounter in the nest, take a few Long Rests.
  2. Revisit the nest periodically. Eventually, goblins will have killed the mother and taken the cub, and the cub will be gone from the cave.
  3. If you attacked from stealth and skipped the first cutscene, you may need to flee combat with the cub still alive; then, after a Long Rest, it can still move to the goblin camp.

If the cub never leaves the cave and you fully wipe the goblin camp too early, it can get stuck there in some versions and patches.

Step 3 – Find the Owlbear Cub in the Goblin Camp

  1. Go to the goblin camp outside the Shattered Sanctum.
  2. Look for the cruel “chicken-chasing” game where goblins make the cub run between posts.
  1. Talk to the goblin boss running the game (Krolla) and then to the cub.

Here, you must let the cub smell your hands and pass one of the checks (Animal Handling, Persuasion, or use Speak with Animals) so it can recognize you later and find your camp.

Step 4 – Your Options in the Goblin Camp

From the chicken game, you have three main ways to “save” the owlbear cub:

  1. Play and win the game
    • Use Speak with Animals and pass checks like “Run toward those posts” so the cub cooperates.
    • After winning, Intimidate, Persuade, pay gold, or use Illithid powers on Krolla to claim your reward and secure the cub’s safety.
  1. Refuse to play and negotiate
    • Tell Krolla you’re not playing.
    • Then Intimidate, Persuade, pay 500 gold, or use Illithid options to take control of the situation and obtain or protect the cub.
  1. Kill the goblins
    • Make sure you interact with the cub and let it smell your hands before you start the massacre.
    • Then fight and kill the goblins around the camp; the cub will escape once the danger is gone.

Any of these routes work as long as:

  • The cub survives.
  • The cub has had the “smell your hands” interaction so it can track you.

Step 5 – Getting the Cub to Your Camp

  1. After saving the cub from the goblin camp (by game, negotiation, or killing goblins), take several Long Rests.
  2. At some point during camp scenes, the owlbear cub will show up at night, visiting cautiously.
  3. If it doesn’t appear, progress the story a bit but try not to finish Act 1 without seeing it; it can still appear later, but it becomes more finicky, and there’s a cutoff around the end of Act 2.

Even if you clear the goblin camp early, the cub can still appear in camp as long as you previously interacted with the mother or the cub before they disappeared.

Step 6 – Keeping the Owlbear Cub as a Camp Follower

Once the cub is visiting your camp, there are a couple of important scenes:

  1. First visit
    • Be kind and feed the cub when you get the chance. This raises its attitude and solidifies the bond.
  1. Second visit
    • The cub may appear injured. Heal it using Medicine, Survival, or similar checks, or talk it through using gentle options. This is another loyalty step that helps make it a permanent friendly presence.

After these events, the cub becomes a regular camp “pet” and will show up whenever you return to camp, sometimes interacting with Scratch and your party.

Extra Tip – Take the Owlbear Egg

While you are in the Owlbear Nest after the mother has died, grab the owlbear egg.
This egg can be used later in the “Steal a Githyanki Egg” quest, letting you skip the much tougher heist at Creche Y’llek.

TL;DR – How to save the owlbear cub

  1. Meet the mother and cub in the cave, don’t kill the cub, and leave with it alive.
  2. Long Rest until goblins remove the cub from the cave.
  3. Find the cub in the goblin camp’s chicken game, talk to it, and let it smell your hands.
  4. Either win the game, negotiate, or kill the goblins—just keep the cub alive.
  5. Take several Long Rests until it visits camp; feed it and later heal it to keep it permanently.
