How to tell if a purple snap was already taken a while ago

A purple Snap usually just means an unopened Snap with audio, not that it was “taken a while ago.” The best clue that it was old is the time gap between when you got the notification and when you opened it, because Snapchat’s color icons show status, not age. Snapchat says purple means a Snap with audio, and a Snap or Chat may be pending or expired if it hasn’t been handled in time.

What purple means

  • Purple square on the Friends screen = an unopened Snap with audio.
  • Purple arrow in chat view = a Snap with audio you sent has not been viewed yet.
  • Purple itself does not tell you when the photo or video was actually captured.

Signs it was taken earlier

  • The sender may have been active for a while before sending it.
  • The snap may arrive late because of app delays, poor connection, or the sender sending it from memory/photos.
  • Snapchat support notes that you may see “Media Upload” when a Snap contains media previously taken on Snapchat or another platform.

Practical check

  1. Open the Snap and look for “Media Upload” in the top-left corner.
  1. Check whether the icon is still unread or has changed state in chat.
  1. Compare the send time with when you received it, if that info is visible in the conversation.
  2. If you’re trying to tell whether it was freshly recorded or recycled, look for signs it came from Camera Roll or another app rather than being captured live.

TL;DR

Purple means audio Snap , not “old Snap.” If you want to know whether it was taken a while ago, the most useful clue is whether Snapchat shows Media Upload or other signs it came from saved media rather than a live capture.
