how to turn off location on instagram

To turn off location on Instagram, you need to (1) block the app from using your phone’s GPS and (2) switch off Instagram’s own location / map sharing options.

Turn off Instagram location on iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  1. Scroll down and tap Instagram.
  1. Tap Location.
  1. Select Never so Instagram can’t access your location at all.
  1. Also toggle off Precise Location for extra privacy if it’s visible.

Then double-check inside the Instagram app:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile (bottom-right).
  1. Tap the menu icon (three lines) in the top-right.
  1. Go to Settings and privacy.
  1. Find Location and turn off any location-related toggles you see (such as location permissions or map/location sharing).

Turn off Instagram location on Android

First stop Android from sharing your location with Instagram:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings.
  1. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications / Application manager , depending on your device).
  1. Find and select Instagram.
  1. Tap PermissionsLocation.
  1. Choose Don’t allow (or Deny) so the app can’t use location.

Then check inside Instagram:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  1. Tap the menu icon (top-right).
  1. Go to Settings and privacy → look for Location.
  1. Turn off any options related to location or map/location sharing.

Turn off Instagram Map / Friends Map location

Instagram’s newer map features can show where you’ve shared your location, including via location tags or live/shared location settings.

To lock this down:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  1. Tap the menu icon (top-right).
  1. Scroll to Story, Live & Location (wording may vary slightly by region/update).
  1. Tap Location sharing.
  1. Choose No one , then tap Done to save.

You can also:

  • Open Messages (DM icon), tap Map at the top, then tap the settings/cog icon and set Who can see your location to No one.

Note: Even with live location off, posts or stories where you manually tag a location can still appear on the map for that place, so avoid adding location tags if you want full location privacy.
