how to use pooled miles on united

United’s pooled miles let up to five MileagePlus members combine miles into one shared pool, and the pool leader can then use those miles to book award travel from united.com or the United app. The big catch is that pooled miles can’t be mixed with personal miles in the same redemption, and once miles are contributed, they generally stay in the pool.

How it works

  1. One adult MileagePlus member creates the pool and invites up to four other members.
  1. Members accept the invite and choose how many miles to contribute.
  1. After a short waiting period, the pool balance can be used for eligible award bookings.
  1. The pool leader, or someone the leader authorizes, redeems the pooled miles for a ticket.

Important limits

  • You can only belong to one pool at a time.
  • New members typically have a waiting period before they can contribute or redeem.
  • If a member leaves a pool, they must wait 90 days before joining another one.
  • Historically, pooled miles were limited to United-operated flights, though a June 2026 update indicates they can now be redeemed on partner airlines as well.

Practical tip

Pooled miles are most useful when one person has most of the balance but another member has just enough to close the gap on an award booking. A common use case is combining small family balances so you can book one ticket sooner instead of letting a few thousand miles sit unused.

Fastest way to use them

Go to your MileagePlus account, open the miles pooling area, create or join the pool, wait for the contribution window to clear, then search for an award flight and book with the pooled balance. If the award you want requires more miles than the pool has, you’ll need to add more miles to the pool or choose a different itinerary.
