oblivion what does chameleon do

In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Chameleon is an Illusion effect that makes you partially invisible and much harder to detect, and at 100% or more it effectively makes you permanently invisible to NPCs.

What Chameleon Actually Does

  • Chameleon makes your character blend into the environment, reducing the chance that enemies will notice you.
  • Unlike Invisibility, Chameleon does not break when you attack, cast spells, or interact with the world, which makes it extremely strong for stealth.
  • The effect is expressed as a percentage (for example, “Chameleon 25% for 30 seconds on Self”).

Percentages and Detection

  • Low to mid values (10–50%) just make enemies slower and less likely to detect you, especially when you are sneaking and staying in the shadows.
  • High values (75–99%) make you very hard to see, but NPCs can still detect you if you stand right in front of them, make noise, or don’t sneak.
  • At a total of 100% Chameleon or higher (from gear, spells, sigil stones, etc.), you become effectively “always invisible” to normal enemies, even while running around and attacking, with a few edge‑case exceptions like some traps and special enemies.

How It Differs From Invisibility

  • Invisibility makes you fully unseen, but the effect instantly ends when you attack, cast most spells, or interact with objects.
  • Chameleon is weaker at low values, but at 100%+ it’s stronger in practice because:
    • It does not end when you attack or cast.
    • You can stack it permanently through enchanted items and effects.

A common “power‑gamer” setup is stacking Chameleon on multiple armor pieces, rings, and amulets until you reach or exceed 100%, turning your character into a permanent, attacking ghost that enemies basically ignore.
