signs of pneumonia

Pneumonia often starts like a bad chest infection, but certain signs suggest the lungs are getting seriously inflamed and need medical attention.

Main warning signs

  • Cough that may bring up yellow, green, or bloody mucus (phlegm).
  • Fever and chills , sometimes quite high, often with sweating and feeling very unwell.
  • Shortness of breath or feeling like you cannot catch your breath, especially with activity or when lying down.
  • Chest pain that is sharp or stabbing and gets worse when you breathe deeply or cough.

Other common symptoms

  • Marked fatigue , weakness, and loss of appetite.
  • Fast breathing and a rapid heart rate.
  • Sweating or night sweats.
  • Aching body , headaches, and general flu‑like feelings that continue to worsen instead of improving.

In children and older adults

  • In children , signs can include fast or difficult breathing, cough, fever, grunting or wheezing sounds, bluish lips or skin, poor feeding, or unusual sleepiness.
  • In older adults , confusion or sudden changes in thinking, along with weakness and breathing trouble, may be more obvious than cough or fever.

When to seek urgent care

  • Trouble breathing, breathing very fast, or using extra chest/neck muscles to breathe.
  • Blue or gray lips or fingertips, chest pain, high or persistent fever, or new confusion.

Anyone who suspects pneumonia—especially babies, older adults, pregnant people, or those with heart, lung, or immune problems—should contact a healthcare professional quickly, as early treatment lowers the risk of serious complications.
