what belt size should i get

You can usually pick your belt size in 10 seconds once you know your waist or jeans size.

Fast rule of thumb

  • Take your actual waist / jeans size in inches.
  • Add 2 inches → that’s your belt size most of the time.
  • Example: if you wear 32" pants, get a 34" belt. If you wear 36" pants, get a 38" belt.

If you’re between sizes (say 33" waist), round up and follow the same rule → 33" waist → 35" belt (or just pick the closest, 34–36" belt range).

Simple size ranges (men & unisex)

Most brands follow something like:

  • Waist 29–31" → Belt 31–33" (usually size S)
  • Waist 32–34" → Belt 34–36" (usually size M)
  • Waist 35–37" → Belt 37–39" (usually size L)
  • Waist 38–40" → Belt 40–42" (usually XL)

Many universal charts also map like this:

  • Waist about 28–30" → Belt 30–32" (XS–S)
  • Waist about 31–33" → Belt 32–34" (M)
  • Waist about 34–35" → Belt 36" (L)
  • Waist about 36–37" → Belt 38–40" (XL)

If your waist is above 40", belts typically go 2"–4" above waist as well (e.g., 42" waist → 44–46" belt).

Quick way using a belt you own

If you already have a belt that fits well:

  1. Lay it flat on a table.
  2. Measure from the hole you use most to the point where the buckle meets the leather (not the tip of the buckle).
  3. That measurement (in inches) is your ideal belt size.

Many online charts are built around that “middle-hole-to-buckle” length, which is why belts are usually about 2" longer than pant size.

Dress vs casual belts

  • Dress belts (for suits/formal wear):
    • Fit best when the buckle closes on the middle hole , with 2–3" of tail past the buckle.
    • Still: waist + 2" works in most cases.
  • Casual / jeans belts :
    • Can be a bit looser or longer; tail can be slightly longer without looking odd.
    • If you sag or wear low-rise jeans, you may need waist + 3–4" instead.

What if I’m buying online and not sure?

If a site gives S/M/L/etc, you can roughly match like this:

  • S: belt 31–33", usually fits ~29–31" waist
  • M: belt 34–36", usually fits ~32–34" waist
  • L: belt 37–39", usually fits ~35–37" waist
  • XL: belt 40–42", usually fits ~38–40" waist

If you’re exactly between two sizes or your weight tends to fluctuate, go one size up ; you can always use an inner hole, but you can’t add length.

TL;DR (one-liner)

  • Take your waist/jeans size in inches, add 2, and buy that belt size; if between sizes or carrying extra around the waist, go one size up.
