what goes first sunscreen or moisturizer

Sunscreen usually goes after moisturizer. That said, the safest rule is: apply moisturizer first, let it absorb, then apply sunscreen as the last skincare step before makeup or going outside.

Simple order

  1. Cleanser.
  2. Moisturizer.
  3. Sunscreen.
  4. Makeup, if you wear it.

Why this order

Moisturizer helps hydrate and prep the skin, while sunscreen needs to sit on top to form an even protective layer. Layering sunscreen last also helps reduce pilling and keeps the SPF layer intact.

Small exception

Some sources note that sunscreen type can matter, especially for certain formulas, but for a normal daily routine, moisturizer first then sunscreen is the practical default. If your sunscreen is a moisturizer with SPF, use it as your final morning step.

Quick tip

Use enough sunscreen and reapply during the day, especially if you’re outdoors.
