what is cradle cap caused by

Cradle cap is usually caused by overactive oil glands in a baby’s scalp, likely influenced by maternal hormones before birth, with a yeast called Malassezia possibly playing a role too. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is not contagious.

What’s going on

Babies naturally make extra sebum, which can make dead skin cells stick together and form the yellow, flaky crusts seen with cradle cap. The exact cause isn’t fully known, but the condition is generally considered a harmless form of seborrheic dermatitis.

What it is not

  • Not a sign of dirty skin or bad bathing habits.
  • Not something your baby caught from another baby.
  • Not usually dangerous, though the skin can occasionally get irritated or infected if scratched.

When to check in

If the rash spreads a lot, looks very red, oozes, or seems painful, a pediatrician can confirm it’s cradle cap and suggest treatment.
