what to do if a dog attacks you

If a dog attacks you, try to stay calm, protect your face and neck, and put something between you and the dog if you can. Once you’re safe, get medical care right away, even for bites that look minor, because infection and other complications can develop later.

In the moment

  • Do not run or scream, because sudden movement can escalate the dog’s aggression.
  • Back away slowly if you can, and use a barrier like a bag, jacket, bench, car, tree, or bike to create space.
  • If the dog is actively biting, use an object like a jacket, backpack, or bag to shield yourself rather than trying to hit the dog.
  • If other people are nearby, calmly ask for help and have someone call emergency services or animal control if needed.

After the attack

  • Wash wounds as soon as possible and seek urgent medical care.
  • Get the owner’s contact details and the dog’s vaccination history if you safely can.
  • Take photos of the injuries and write down what happened while it’s fresh.
  • Report the incident to local authorities or animal control so it can be tracked.

Get help fast

If the bite is deep, bleeding heavily, near the face or neck, or the dog may have rabies, call emergency services immediately. If you want, I can also give you a very short “what to do in 30 seconds” version.
