What type of ID do I need to re enter USA from Canada if I drive over to Canada and come back?

For most people driving back into the USA from Canada, the safest ID to bring is a valid passport. U.S. rules also accept some other Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant documents for land entry, including a NEXUS card for eligible travelers, but a passport is the most broadly accepted option.

What usually works

  • U.S. citizens: valid passport is best; some other approved documents may also be accepted for land entry.
  • Canadian citizens: usually need proof of citizenship, and a passport is the clearest choice for re-entering the U.S. by car.
  • NEXUS card holders: NEXUS can be used at land borders, but you still must be admissible and may be sent for extra inspection.

Important note

A driver’s license by itself is not enough to re-enter the U.S. from Canada in most cases. If you’re not sure what applies to your status, the safest move is to carry a passport and any supporting travel documents you may need.

Simple answer

If you want the most reliable one-document answer: bring your passport.

TL;DR: Driving back from Canada into the USA? Bring a valid passport; NEXUS may also work if you have it, but passport is the safest default.
