when do we get winter fuel payment

You usually get the Winter Fuel Payment between mid‑November and the end of December , after receiving a confirmation letter in October or November for that winter.

Key 2025–26 timing

  • Payments for winter 2025–26 are scheduled from mid‑November 2025 onwards , and most people are paid in November or December 2025.
  • Before that, you should get a letter in October or November telling you how much you’ll get and which bank account it will be paid into.

Who gets it and when

  • You normally qualify if you’re over State Pension age and were born on or before 21 September 1959 for winter 2025–26, and you were in the UK (England, Wales or Northern Ireland) during the September “qualifying week”.
  • If you are eligible and already get State Pension or certain benefits, the payment is automatic , going into the same bank account as your usual benefit.

If you don’t get it automatically

  • You may need to claim if you have deferred your State Pension and do not get another qualifying benefit, or if you have never had a Winter Fuel Payment before.
  • For winter 2025–26, you can usually make a claim from 15 September 2025 , and the deadline to claim is 31 March 2026.

Special notes (Scotland and higher incomes)

  • In Scotland , Winter Fuel Payment has been replaced by the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment , with a separate system run by the Scottish Government.
  • If your annual income is over £35,000 , HMRC can recover the Winter Fuel Payment through the tax system , and there is an option to opt out before the mid‑September deadline if you don’t want to receive it.
