when should babies be able to hold their head up
Babies usually start lifting and briefly holding their head up around 1 to 2 months, and most can do it more steadily by about 3 months. By 4 to 6 months, head control is typically much stronger and much more reliable.
What’s typical
- 1 month: brief lifting, especially during tummy time.
- 2 months: should begin holding the head up with more ease.
- 3 months: most babies can control head movement much better.
- 4 to 6 months: head control is usually well developed.
When to check in
If a baby is not lifting or holding their head up at all by 2 months, it’s a good idea to mention it to a pediatrician. If head control still seems weak by 3 months, that’s also worth medical attention.
Helpful note
Tummy time helps build the neck and upper-body strength babies need for head control.
TL;DR: Many babies start around 1 to 2 months, and should have much better head control by 3 to 4 months.
