Pope Benedict XVI was elected pope on 19 April 2005, during the conclave that followed the death of Pope John Paul II.

He was chosen as the 265th successor of Saint Peter on the second day of the conclave, being elected on the fourth ballot by the College of Cardinals in the Sistine Chapel.
