when was the armistice signed

The armistice that ended fighting in World War I was signed in the early morning of 11 November 1918, in a railway carriage near Compiègne in northern France. It was agreed around 5:00–5:45 a.m. and scheduled to take effect later that morning at 11:00 a.m., giving rise to the phrase “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”
