The ballpoint pen, in the form we recognize today, was invented in 1938 by Hungarian journalist László Bíró, who patented his practical design that year. Earlier, the first patent for a ballpoint-style pen was granted to John J. Loud on 30 October 1888, but his version was not suitable for everyday writing and was never commercially successful.
