where are dogs lymph nodes

Dogs have several main lymph node groups that can be felt just under the skin in specific areas of the body. These are small, bean-like structures that sit along the neck, shoulders, armpits, groin, and behind the knees.

Main lymph node spots

  • Under the jaw (submandibular) : On either side where the lower jaw meets the neck, you can often feel small, movable lumps just behind and beneath the jawbone. These are usually the easiest lymph nodes for owners to find.
  • Front of shoulder/neck (prescapular) : In front of the shoulder blades, where the neck and shoulder meet, there is a pair of nodes that can feel like small beans under the skin. Vets often check these when examining for generalized enlargement.

Along the front legs and body

  • Armpits (axillary) : Located deep in the “armpit” area of the front legs, near where the leg joins the chest. These can be harder for owners to feel unless they are enlarged.
  • Groin (inguinal) : Found in the inner thigh/groin region on either side of the genital area. These may be palpable as soft lumps when the dog is lying on their back with legs relaxed.

Back legs

  • Behind the knee (popliteal) : Situated at the back of the hind leg, in the hollow behind the knee (stifle). These are usually quite accessible and are commonly used by vets to check for swelling.

When to be concerned

  • Lymph nodes that suddenly feel much larger , firm, hot, or painful, or are paired with symptoms like lethargy, fever, weight loss, coughing, or poor appetite, warrant prompt vet attention.
  • Causes range from local infection (like a skin or dental problem) to immune conditions or cancers such as lymphoma, so only a veterinarian can determine the cause safely.

If you are checking your dog at home and notice new or rapidly growing lumps in any of these areas, arrange a veterinary exam as soon as possible. Information gathered from public forums or data available on the internet and portrayed here.
