where are the oblique muscles

The oblique muscles are on the sides of your abdomen , running from your lower ribs down toward the top of your pelvis/hip bones on each side of your waist.

Basic location

  • They sit on the left and right sides of your trunk, between your rib cage and your hips.
  • The external obliques are the outer layer you can feel just to the side of your abs; the internal obliques lie just underneath them.

How to “find” them on your body

  • Place your hands on your waist, then slide them slightly forward toward your belly and up toward your lower ribs; that diagonal area is where the obliques run.
  • When you twist your torso or do side bends, the firm bands of muscle you feel tightening along the side of your abdomen are your obliques.

What they attach to

  • They connect from the lower ribs down to structures on the pelvis like the iliac crest (the top ridge of the hip bone) and the inguinal ligament at the front of the pelvis.
  • Their fibers run diagonally, which is why they are called “oblique” muscles rather than vertical like the six‑pack rectus abdominis.
