where did cane toads come from

Cane toads originally come from the tropical parts of Central and South America, including areas of southern North America and northern South America. They were later transported around the world by humans, mainly to Caribbean islands and then to places like Hawaii, to act as biological control agents for insect pests in sugarcane and other crops.

In 1935, cane toads were brought from Hawaii to Queensland, Australia, to control cane beetles in sugarcane fields, and about 2,400 toads were released soon after breeding in captivity. The plan failed as pest control, but the toads thrived in their new environment, spread rapidly, and are now a major invasive species across northern and eastern Australia.
