where did katherine johnson grow up

Katherine Johnson grew up in the small town of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in the United States.

She was born there on August 26, 1918, and spent her childhood in this rural Appalachian community before traveling to Institute, West Virginia, for higher schooling when the local county offered no Black high school beyond eighth grade.
