where do diamonds spawn
Diamonds in Minecraft spawn deep underground, mostly in the deepslate layers, with the highest concentration close to bedrock between about Y -53 and Y -59 (often mined around Y -53 to -59 for safety from lava).
Quick Scoop
“If you’re not seeing diamonds, you’re probably not deep enough.”
Core spawn range
- Diamonds can spawn between Y 16 and Y -64 in modern Minecraft (1.18+ cave generation and into 1.20–1.21).
- They start getting noticeably more common below Y 0 , once you’re in deepslate.
- The best levels are roughly Y -53 to Y -59 , where the ore density is highest.
A popular “sweet spot” many players use is Y -53 or -54 : high diamond density but slightly less lava-in-your-face than right at the bottom.
How they actually spawn
- Diamond ore generates in veins scattered across the underground, more frequent the deeper you go.
- In the big new caves, diamonds touching air blocks are a bit less likely , so strip-mining in solid stone (or underwater caves) can sometimes beat just wandering exposed cave walls.
- You’ll mainly find them in deepslate diamond ore blocks once you’re below Y 0, which take longer to mine but drop the same diamonds.
Example: a player on a recent forum thread recommended heading to around Y -58 , exploring the wide deepslate caves, and grabbing diamonds from cave walls and floors instead of classic branch mines.
Bedrock vs older versions
- In current versions (1.18+) : best range is deep deepslate, Y -53 to -59, with overall spawn range roughly -64 to 16.
- In older versions (1.17 and earlier) : players used to mine near Y 11–12 because the world bottom was higher and lava lakes sat around Y 10.
If you return to an old world version or see old guides saying “mine at Y11”, that’s why it looks different.
Biomes and special spots
- Diamonds can spawn in pretty much any Overworld biome ; what matters much more is your Y-level rather than which surface biome you’re under.
- Be careful under mountains or highlands : the Deep Dark often generates in the same deep layers where diamonds are best, bringing sculk sensors and wardens.
Some advanced guides also highlight underwater caves : since there’s no air inside them, diamond generation isn’t reduced by air exposure rules, making them surprisingly rich if you can handle breathing and mobs.
Fast practical checklist
- Turn on coordinates.
- Dig down (safely) or follow caves until you reach around Y -53 to -59.
- Either:
- Strip-mine in straight tunnels through deepslate, or
- Explore large caves and grab diamonds from walls and floors.
- Watch for lava around Y -54 ; many players stand slightly above it at Y -53.
TL;DR: Diamonds spawn from about Y 16 down to Y -64, but if you want the best odds right now, live in the deepslate at roughly Y -53 to -59 and mine or cave there.
