where do wisdom teeth grow
Wisdom teeth grow at the very back of your mouth, in the position of the “third molars” on both the upper and lower jaws.
Where they grow
- Wisdom teeth are third molars that sit behind your second molars on each side of your mouth.
- Most people (who have them) can have up to four: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right, all in the very back corners.
When they usually appear
- They are the last adult teeth to erupt, typically between ages 17 and 25.
- Some people never develop them at all, and others may have fewer than four or, rarely, extra wisdom teeth.
How they grow (normal vs. problematic)
- Ideally, wisdom teeth erupt straight up through the gums like other molars, lining up with your bite.
- If there isn’t enough jaw space, they can stay trapped (impacted), grow at an angle, or even sideways under the gum or into neighboring teeth, which can cause pain or crowding.
Top vs. bottom
- Wisdom teeth grow in both upper and lower jaws; many people have two on top and two on the bottom.
- Problems such as impaction or sideways growth are often more noticeable with lower wisdom teeth because of tighter space in the lower jaw.
