Aerobic respiration takes place mainly in the mitochondria of the cell, often called the “powerhouse” because this is where most ATP (energy) is made. Parts of the overall respiration pathway (like glycolysis) begin in the cytoplasm, but the aerobic stages that need oxygen occur inside the mitochondria.
