where does the cable car pick up at hyde

The Powell–Hyde cable car picks you up at two main points on the Hyde line:

  1. At the start of the route (Union Square side):
    • Powell & Market Street – the big turntable in front of Union Square (across from Nordstrom’s). This is where both the Powell–Hyde and Powell–Mason lines begin.
  1. At the end of the route (Fisherman’s Wharf side):
    • Hyde & Beach Streets – the turntable at Aquatic Park , just west of Ghirardelli Square near Fisherman’s Wharf. This is where the line officially “picks up” if you’re boarding from the bay side.

There’s also a special summer-only loop called the “Hyde Ride” that runs only on Fridays–Sundays (11 a.m.–6 p.m.) between Hyde & Beach and points like Lombard Street, the Cable Car Museum, and Chinatown—but these cars do not go to Powell & Market.

Quick pickup summary

  • If you want the classic ride to Union Square:
Board at Hyde & Beach and ride up Hyde to Powell & Market.

  • If you’re starting from downtown/Union Square:
Board at Powell & Market and ride down to Hyde & Beach.

  • If you’re just there for the scenic loop:
Look for the special “Hyde Ride” departures from Hyde & Beach; these are separate from the regular service and don’t run to Powell Street.
