where is account number on check

On a standard check, the account number is the long number printed along the bottom, usually in the middle or just to the right of center.

Quick Scoop: Where the account number is

Most checks in the U.S. follow this basic layout along the bottom:

  1. Left side:
    • Routing number (9 digits) on the far left.
  1. Middle section:
    • Account number: this is typically the second set of numbers from the left.
    • It’s usually between about 8–12 digits and is specific to your personal account.
  1. Right side:
    • Check number: often the last, shorter set of numbers on the right.

A simple way to remember it:

  • Find the 9‑digit routing number on the far left.
  • The account number is the long number immediately after that, before the final (shorter) check number.

If the last two number groups look similar, pick the longer one as your account number; the shorter is generally the check number.
