Dagestan is a republic in the southern part of Russia, located in the North Caucasus region along the western shore of the Caspian Sea. It lies at the eastern end of the northern flank of the Greater Caucasus mountain range and is the southernmost region of the Russian Federation. The capital city of Dagestan is Makhachkala, which sits on the Caspian Sea coast.
