where is the spleen located

The spleen is located in the upper left part of the abdomen, just beneath the diaphragm, behind the stomach, and tucked under the left rib cage (around ribs 9–11).

Basic location

  • The spleen sits in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, also called the left hypochondriac region.
  • It lies behind and slightly to the side of the stomach and above the left colic (splenic) flexure of the colon.

Relation to ribs and surface

  • Anatomically, it is usually found deep to the left 9th–11th ribs, so it is protected by the rib cage.
  • In a healthy adult, the spleen is about the size of a fist and normally cannot be felt from the outside unless it is enlarged.
