where on the person’s abdomen should you give abdominal thrusts?
Place your hands in the upper part of the abdomen, in the midline:
- Stand (or kneel, for a child) behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist.
- Make a fist and place it just above the belly button and well below the bottom of the breastbone (sternum) , on the soft part of the upper abdomen.
- Grasp your fist with your other hand and give quick, inward and upward thrusts, as if trying to lift the person.
Avoid placing your hands directly on the ribs, the breastbone, or over the very bottom of the rib cage, as that can cause injury.
