where to get a new social security card

You can get a new Social Security card through the Social Security Administration, either online or in person, depending on your situation. The replacement is free, and if you can’t do it online, you can complete the paper form and bring your documents to a local Social Security office or Card Center.

Where to go

  • Online: Use your personal Social Security account if you’re eligible.
  • In person: Visit your local Social Security office or Card Center if you can’t complete the request online.
  • Outside the U.S.: Contact the Federal Benefits Unit for the country where you live, or your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate if your country is not listed.

When online works

You may be able to request a replacement online if you’re a U.S. citizen age 18 or older, have a U.S. mailing address, have a my Social Security account, and have a driver’s license or state ID from a participating state. You also must not need changes to your name, date of birth, place of birth, or gender.

What to bring

If you apply in person, you’ll need the required documents for your situation, and the SSA says you can download and fill out Form SS-5 before you go.

Helpful note

In many cases, you do not need the physical card itself; knowing your Social Security number is often enough.
