where was the sound of music made
The classic 1965 film The Sound of Music was made both on location in Austria and Germany and on studio sets in California, USA. Much of the outdoor scenery comes from around Salzburg and the Berchtesgadener Land, while interiors and additional work were completed at 20th Century Fox studios.
Main filming locations
- Salzburg, Austria – Key sites include Mirabell Gardens, Nonnberg Abbey, Residenzplatz, and various palaces used for the von Trapp villa. These locations provide most of the city and “Do-Re-Mi” montage shots.
- Salzburger Land & nearby areas – Scenic mountain and countryside shots were filmed in the Austrian Alps and surrounding lakes and villages such as Mondsee and Werfen. The famous “hills are alive” meadow is near Marktschellenberg, just over the border in Germany.
- Berchtesgadener Land, Germany – Additional alpine exteriors were filmed around Mehlweg and Obersalzberg in Bavaria, providing dramatic mountain backdrops.
Studio work in the USA
- 20th Century Fox studios, California – Many interior scenes, reconstructed abbey catacombs, and some villa interiors were created on soundstages in Hollywood. This allowed more controlled lighting, sound, and complex set builds than the European locations.
