which method is taught for relieving choking in an infant
For a choking infant (under 1 year), the taught method is a sequence of back blows and chest thrusts , not the Heimlich/abdominal thrusts used for older children and adults.
Core method
- Place the infant face-down along your forearm or thigh, with the head lower than the chest, and deliver up to 5 firm back blows between the shoulder blades.
- If still choking, turn the infant face-up, keep the head lower than the chest, and give up to 5 quick chest thrusts with two fingers on the center of the chest just below the nipple line.
- Repeat cycles of back blows and chest thrusts and have someone call emergency services if the obstruction does not clear or the infant becomes unresponsive.
What is not used
- Abdominal thrusts (traditional Heimlich) are not recommended for infants because they can cause internal injury and are reserved for children over 1 year and adults.
