who built the colosseum

The Colosseum in Rome was commissioned by the Roman emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty around 70–72 CE, then completed and inaugurated by his son Titus, with further modifications by his younger son Domitian. The physical construction itself was carried out by thousands of enslaved people—especially Jewish prisoners of war from Judaea—under Roman architects, engineers, and craftsmen.

So in short:

  • Planned and paid for by the Flavian emperors (Vespasian, Titus, Domitian).
  • Actually built through the labor of enslaved workers, particularly Jewish slaves captured after the siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE.
