who discovered gamma rays

Gamma rays were discovered in 1900 by the French chemist and physicist Paul Ulrich Villard.

He found them while studying radiation from radium and noticed a very penetrating, electrically neutral kind of radiation that was different from alpha and beta rays. A few years later, Ernest Rutherford proposed calling this new radiation “gamma rays,” a name that has been used ever since.
