who was the first archbishop of canterbury

The first Archbishop of Canterbury was St Augustine of Canterbury , a Benedictine monk sent from Rome by Pope Gregory the Great in 597 to evangelise the Anglo‑Saxons in England.

He arrived in Kent in 597, was welcomed by King Æthelberht of Kent, and established his seat at Canterbury, serving as archbishop until his death around 604/605.
